Rationale for Wireless Networking in SD74

Wireless networking means power computing anytime, anywhere. Bringing this robust tool to our students in SD74 is a forward step in helping raise successful and well-prepared citizens of the 21st century. Laptop computers (tablet PCs, handhelds and other mobile devices for that matter) offer two upfront advantages. They take up less space in classrooms; and they can be used in other locations. Add the capability of a wireless network and you’ll get a scenario where communication, documents and resources are available at a student’s fingertips “just-in-time,” where they need it and when they need it as they are learning.

What does the latest research on mobile computing tell us about students, teachers and learning?

A study was conducted in 50 school districts nationwide by Saul Rockman and was report in October’s issue of Technology & Learning journal (2004). For the past decade, Rockman has been leading research group that is focused on the study of ubiquitous laptop computing. Perhaps not surprisingly, Rockman’s findings confirm and emphasize existing research showing that learning is indeed affected in positive and powerful ways when laptops are introduced into the school environment.
